OUR INTERGENERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

“Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity”, is an international UN meeting that will take place on 2 and 3 June 2022, during the week of World Environment Day.  It commemorates 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, widely seen as the first global meeting that made the environment a pressing global issue. The 1972 Stockholm Declaration resulted in the formation of environment ministries and agencies, and produced a host of new global agreements to protect the environment.

Recognizing the interconnections between humans and nature, Stockholm+50 will be an occasion to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. It sets a path for us to overcome the triple planetary crisis of climate change, of nature and biodiversity loss, and of pollution and waste.

Stockholm+50 is convened by the United Nations and is hosted by Sweden with support from the Government of Kenya. It will drive action to achieve sustainable development for the well-being of current and future generations.

The anniversary and the high-level meeting are an opportunity for the international community to strengthen cooperation and show leadership in the transformation towards a more sustainable society, in line with the declaration that was recently adopted in conjunction with the marking of the 75th anniversary of the UN. You can read more about it on: https://www.stockholm50.global/

To further enhance participation of youth, and to provide a universal space for all interested youth and youth advocates to contribute, engage and co-design the youth engagement for Stockholm+50 , the Children and Youth MG in cooperation with LSU has operationalized a Working / Focus Group specific for the process of Stockholm+50, called the Stockholm+50 Youth Working/Focus Group.

The group will work inclined and closely with the facilitating body: Stockholm+50 Youth Task Force (the selections for which are ongoing) and further design and support youth engagement work  along the process until June 2022 and beyond. It will also provide a space to generate policy positions, inputs as required.
