Environmental Peace-building Youth Working Group: kick-off call! Join us!
Dear youth community,
Over the past years there has been more and more focus on the exploration of nexuses and synergies of environmental governance with other thematic fields.
One of the topics receiving most attention on this issue is Environmental Peacebuilding, a term that explores the negative effects of environmental degradation to political stability, human rights and general governance and on the other hand the positive impact that environmental conservation can have for peace and security.
Over the past weeks the Steering Committee of the Children and Youth Major Group, has been in close contact with Geneva Peace Week exploring the youth and environmental governance perspective that the Major Group of Children and Youth can bring to the Environmental Peacebuilding discussion in and around UNEP.
The Geneva Peacebuilding Platform (GPP) currently acts as a neutral convener of the Geneva Dialogue on Environment, Climate, Conflict, and Peace (ECCP) in order to improve the exchange between environmental and peacebuilding communities. GPP, in collaboration with the PeaceNexus Foundation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPax), is undertaking a collective process to develop a White Paper on the Future of Environmental Peace-building to advance a forward-looking, practical agenda for environmental peacebuilding. The White Paper is a collaborative, multi-author project which outlines a vision for the future of environmental peacebuilding.
The Children and Youth Major Group is creating a working group on Environmental Peacebuilding and environment and human rights, which will also be joined by youth with a Peacebuilding background.
This team will work on a youth contribution to the Whitepaper and conduct consultations globally on youth perspectives on environmental peacebuilding.
