Engage in designing the Future of Environmental Governance!

Join Us at the Consultation on UNEP@50

at the International Major Groups and Stakeholders Consultation

We are pleased to invite you to the UNEP@50 consultation session, that will take place on the 8th September 2021 from 13.15 - 14.30 and 15.00 - 16.30 Nairobi time, and will connect Major Groups and Stakeholders (MGS) including youth organisations, member states and UNEP, bringing up new, innovative and provocative voices to policymakers while pushing for fundamental changes.

The Children & Youth and the Scientific & Technological Major Group - leads of the UNEP@50 Task Force - are organizing the thematic session dedicated to the UNEP@50 process and the forthcoming flagship report: The UNEP We Want.

The Session is part of the international MGS Consultation (the Consultation) hosted by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), WECF International, with support of the UNEPfrom 7 - 9 September. Gathering representatives from the UNEP, governments, and civil society, the Consultation will discuss the core messages and political positions for the continuing fifth session of UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2), UNEP@50 and Stockholm+50 process. It will further prepare inputs for the upcoming meetings of the UNEA subcommittee.

2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of UNEP and the Stockholm 1972 UN Conference on Human Environment. As mandated in the UNEA 5.1 Strategic Plan, the UNEP@50 Task Force aims to maximize the participation of the stakeholders and civil society in the UNEP@50 commemoration.

The objective of engaging MGS in this process is to ensure that their views in the future setting and priorities of UNEP are presented and taken into consideration. It is in particular expected that the process will result in new and innovative ideas and alternative views that are not necessarily mainstream, pushing decision makers to consider fundamental rather than just incremental changes, taking into account the lessons learned from the COVID Pandemic and the key environmental challenges of today. Through surveys, global and regional consultations, and interviews, the task force will contribute an MGS perspective at the special session of the UNEA in March 2022.
